Movie review: Star Trek

Once again I’m the last person on the planet to see and review a movie, but I don’t think this movie got enough love (compared to the reportedly horrendous Transformers 2 which made millions of ill-begotten dollars) and am hoping that a few of you malcontents will check it out on DVD.

Forget that it’s a remake of a 60s TV show, forget that it’s sci-fi, forget that it’s full of CGI. This is a great movie. The story drives the special effects, not the other way around.

The script is tight, dialogue is great, casting is perfect, performances are gripping all round and of course, after decades of nerd love, the characters are refined and interesting.

Some of the scenes seemed unnecessary, like the animals on the ice planet and Scottie’s trip through the water pipes but these are minor gripes. When the movie was over all I wanted was to see more of these characters. As they zoomed off into end credits I found myself wondering if and when there would be a sequel. That’s a pretty good sign.

  1. I agree. A movie made with respect for the audience and historic context of the Star Trek series.

It was so refreshing to see such a balanced movie.

Also, how good was Eric Banna!

  2. Aaron says:

I loved it all except for Nero.

I could see Nero waiting around 20 years or so in the depths of space for revenge but him and the whole crew? It felt a bit stupid.
