As previously mentioned, getting my old Transformers out and tarting them up for the masses on eBay has made me feel nostalgic about giant japanese robots all over again. So much so that last weekend I dragged out and watched the 1986 Transformers Movie for the first time in many many years.
There are two scenes in the movie that traumatised an entire generation of young boys [who are all now aged in their late 20s]. To make way for more toys, a slew of classic generation 1 characters are killed off in the first thirty minutes of the movie with little or no fanfare. You can see the first traumatic scene here [recommended viewing] where Prowl, Ironhide, Ratchet and Brawn all get massacred by Megatron and co in their own ship. The worst of it is the closeup of Prowl’s face as he dies. His blue eyes glow orange and then burn out as orange smoke comes out of his mouth. He then falls backward with a heavy thud, his chest aflame. In the TV show [at least in the American version] no one died, at worst they’d lose a limb and end up in the sick bay where Ratchet and Wheeljack would put them back together.
The second traumatic scene is the death of everyone’s favourite semi trailer, Optimus Prime. After a savage duel with Megatron, he dies on the operating table and goes deathly grey. Anyone who tells you they didn’t cry when they saw Prime die as a kid is a godamn liar.
Cool TF clips from YouTube etc:
- An awesome glam metal version of the TF themesong set to clips from the movie
- Die Autobots! – The aforementioned trauma inducing scene where a whole bunch of Autobots get ganked
- Optimus Prime vs Megatron Duel
- Soundwave vs Blaster – Not from the movie, but still cool.
- TV ad for the Blaster toy
